Making CBD oil is not as difficult as it might sound. For those who want to gain all the benefits of CBD oil without the additional costs, creating your own can be a viable option. Learning to make your own CBD oil is definitely a better solution as opposed to commercial purchases.
The profit margins of commercial production are razor thin and it is impossible to know how it is made and what’s in it. It is always a good practice to make your own where possible, especially since it is actually quite easy to do. Before we begin, here is a quick recap of the many benefits of CBD oil.
The Health Benefits of CBD Oil
The two primary compounds of cannabis are THC and CBD, and each of these has multiple beneficial effects on human functioning, which are well documented. Both of these beautiful compounds act on the cannabinoid receptors in the brain but vary in their effects.
THC is what is responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis, which is what gets people high. THC and CBD are each useful for certain illnesses. But CBD is used purely for therapeutic and medical purposes.
Because the health benefits of CBD are so many, it is only possible to give a brief explanation of how it works. There are hundreds of reputable scientific studies on its benefits, which are not debated. What is much more pertinent is why such an amazing compound was outlawed for so long, with no compelling reasons given. Some of the diseases it has been proven to ameliorate include -
- Pain (neuropathic, chronic, cancer-related, etc.)
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
- Broken Bones
- Bacterial Infections
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Because it works on the endocannabinoid system, which is intrinsically linked to the central nervous system and endocrine system, it works to a degree on practically all diseases. There is even an endocannabinoid deficiency theory that all disease must be linked to cannabinoids, explaining why CBD and THC have positive effects on so many health issues, from headaches to IBS to depression to schizophrenia.
Now that we are sold on the health benefits of CBD oil, let's see how to make it from home.
CBD Oil - How to Make It
It should be borne in mind that there are a wide variety of ways to make CBD oil and a number of different tools that can be used. It will be up to you to decide on which one are the most convenient and most effective, and it comes down to personal preferences in many instances.
The method below is known as the “oil’ method. This has the added benefit that the user can choose his or her own carrier oil for additional benefits, such as olive oil or coconut oil. Another popular method is the ethanol method, using alcohol for extraction.
Carbon Dioxide extraction is a good way to produce very high-quality CBD oil, though it requires more tools and sophistication. But if you run through the following steps, your end product should be as good as any, depending on the marijuana quality.
Step 1: The first step is always to choose high-quality organic marijuana. Find a local or reputable dealer or else a high-quality medical strain. The quality of marijuana will largely determine the quality of CBD oil produced. It's better to select a high CBD strain such as ACDC or Charlotte’s Web.
Step 2: Put your marijuana through the process of decarboxylation. This is an initial step for all types of marijuana product manufacture, from CBD oil to weed cookies. Place the marijuana in an oven and bake for about 90 minutes at 220 degrees Fahrenheit. If you decide to skip this step, then remember to grind your weed into a fine powder. Both of these techniques help with absorbability. Fahrenheit
Step 3: Using a saucepan, add half water and half oil. The amount is up to you, but the proportion should be 50/50 oil to water. The most popular oil selected is olive oil. While extra virgin olive oil is the highest quality, it can turn rancid if cooked at too high a temperature. Opt for regular (but high-quality) olive oil.
Step 4: Next, you want to heat the mixture slowly, increasing the temperature consistently over time. You want to hit a low boil. When you start seeing bubbles reaching the surface, dial back the heat a little. You need to avoid a temperature of 300 degrees Fahrenheit and stick to the region of 200. This is the temperature at which cannabinoids leech into the olive oil.
Step 5: “Cook” your oil until most of the water is removed. This should take 30 minutes or so. The cannabis should be floating at the top, and you are now ready for the final stage.
Step 6: Let the mix cool to room temperature, and strain using a cheesecloth into a jar or other storage item. Seal the pot or jar and put it into the fridge for 2 hours.
Step 7: When everything has cooled, the olive oil should have coagulated (hardened) and the remaining water should be at the bottom of the jar. You can drain this water by putting the mixture into another jar.
That's it, a simple and quick process that could end up saving you a considerable amount of money, and also improve your health far more than the industrialized mass produced CBD oil. Always remember that both THC and CBD oil are perishable and should be stored in a cool and dry storage facility. There are a wide variety of uses for CBD oil, such as topical application, along with your favorite meals, or taken straight under the tongue.
It should be borne in mind that as magical as CBD is, it is typically not enough to remove an illness on its own. It should be used in tandem with other practices such as healthy eating, creative work, good social relationships, and medical therapies.
